How to Clean Shade Sails.

Shade sails on the Gold Coast are exposed to the elements and an unpredictable climate. Thus, it is easy for them to build-up dirt, grime, bacteria and mould.

How to Clean a Shade Sail

It is easy for shade sails to get dirty without you realising it. Good shade sails can cost quite a bit, but once they are up, they tend to be forgotten about. Meanwhile, dirt and grime build up slowly, so changes to the appearance of the sail can easily go unnoticed. The problem is, the longer you leave the cleaning your shade sails, the more effort it will be to them clean later and the likelihood of difficult to remove stains increases, as the stains e.g. mould, mildew and droppings, seep into the threading of the material.

Regular Maintenance and cleaning will not only preserve the appearance but also assist in extending shelf life and reduce the need for repairs or replacements. The build-up of contaminants can even create an unhealthy environment, as bacteria and mould can pose a severe health risk.

In short, do not let it go so long between cleans that things start to grow on it; if it looks dirty, then it is time to clean it.

If you want to attempt cleaning your shade sails on our own, just keep in mind that it can be extremely time-consuming and the results can often be less than awesome. If you are still determined to clean your shade sail yourself, then here’s how.

Do:

  • Inspect for marks from mould, mildew, birds, bats, possums, other animals, tree sap and debris.
  • Wash your shade sail on a sunny day, as the material needs to fully dry after being cleaned.
  • Apply a mild but high-quality ph neutral detergent to the top of the Shade Sail by using a hose connected spray bottle or a long soft bristled mop or brush.
  • Leave to soak for one hour.
  • Rinse off your sail with a strong flow of fresh water from your backyard hose.

Do not:

  • Remove the sail. If you are unable to effectively clean the sail in situ, then call JC Eco Blasting to clean your sail for you. If you remove the sail, it will need to be re-tensioned which comes with a high risk of personal injury and can result in damage to the sail and the voiding of any warranty.
  • Use a high-pressure cleaner, as you will damage the thread and your sail will need re-stitching.
  • Put your sails in the washing machine or the clothes dryer. This can cause the shade sails to disintegrate and wear out quickly.
  • Scrub it with a stiff brush, scouring pad, or any other form of abrasive cleaning product.
  • Use harsh chemicals on your shade sails. Chemicals like Bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide, Chlorine and agricultural or industrial chemicals attack the UV stabilizers within shade cloth, thus reducing the life of the sail and voiding any warranty.

Remember, if your shade sail needs a more comprehensive clean, or you are unsure about doing it yourself, get in touch with JC Eco Blasting today.
